PUNK MUSIC

sex-pistols

Punk rock is an anti-establishment rock music genre and movement that emerged in the mid-1970s. Preceded by a variety of protopunk music of the 1960s and early 1970s, punk rock developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, where groups such as the Ramones and Sex Pistols were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement.

Though there are many who say “punk is dead” the music of days past is still very popular! Many new punk bands have gained recognition and huge followings over the years. Punk is not dead, neither is Punk Fashion!

GOTHIC MUSIC

Siouxsie

Two musicians receive credit for the creation of the gothic subculture and movement they are: Peter Murphy (formerly of Bauhaus) and Siouxsie Sioux (formerly of Siouxsie and the Banshees.) They both released their singles and fashion statements in the late 1970’s. Sioux is credited for the creation of the term "gothic" when she mentioned it was the new direction the band was taking.

Siouxsie Sioux and Peter Murphy both enjoy a very successful music career today.

Gothic, when it comes to fashion embraces the statement “I wear black on the outside because black is what I feel on the inside.” That statement comes from another famous singer, Morrissey (formerly of the Smiths.) Though Morissey and the Smiths did not embrace the darkness in fashion, their lyrics are some of the best in all of gothic music history. There are a multitude of gothic bands today.

 INDUSTRIAL MUSIC

Throbbing Gristle

Industrial music is a loose term for a number of different styles of experimental music, especially but not necessarily electronic music. The term was first used in the mid-1970s to describe the then-unique sound of Industrial Records artists.

From Throbbing Gristle of the 70’s to Nine Inch nails of today, the music has evolved. The fashion (or lack there of) has been adopted by heavy metal, death metal and even psychobilly bands.
